Devlog Version BABEL 1.0
Welcome to the world of Babel, where you play as the overseer of constructing the tower of Babel. Your job is to manage all aspects of construction, including managing workers, engineers, archers, and priests, defending the tower from angels, and upgrading your economy. Our goal with this game was to create a clicker game that implements tower defense and roguelike mechanics.
Babel was originally a project for a tower-themed game jam. We worked hard to flesh out the mechanics and build a great foundation for what we wanted to achieve. Unfortunately, time was not on our side… We were only able to get one of our two main mechanics done for the game jam. This did not stop us, though, and it is my great honor to present version 1.0 of Babel. Everything we had hoped to accomplish in the game jam, plus more.
This update was heavily focused on adding game feel to our game as well as fully implementing our combat and a revamped tutorial. Combat was non-existent in the game jam version of this game. This update also came with some behind-the-scenes changes to make our game more modular and buildable. Some of these changes took up a majority of our time. As well as many bug fixes. We added the following:
Core Updates:
-Heresy goes up as floors are built and increases every minute
-Temples decrease heresy at the expense of increasing total heresy a minute
-Heresy bar to represent total heresy
-When heresy hits 100, the game ends
-When heresy hits, 50 angels will spawn
-Added a health system
-More descriptive and intuitive gameplay tutorial
-Art revamps as well as a new character: Grand Seer Belior
Angels:
-Newly created angels attack randomly selected floors
-As the heresy increases above 50, the angels get stronger and bigger
-New UI shows up to indicate angels are coming
-As the number of floors increases, so does the total number of angels that attack at once
Archer towers:
-Archer towers now have a function and shoot at angels
-Custom arrow particle effect that aims at angels
-Lowered the amount of money Archer Towers produces
Major Architecture Refactoring:
-Implementing scriptable objects for art reduces the number of prefabs
-Started work on reworking the floor system to sustain more towers, and upgrade trees
-Uniform UI systems
-Implemented buttons instead of sprite renderers
We cannot thank our loyal playtesters enough for all the incredible feedback we have received this summer. The process of building out Babel has been such a blast, artistically and programmatically.
